Taking on Global Fast Fit: Greg's Story

Fig: The author out on the trails.

I was born in Germany and grew up in Austria (not Australia!). In 2001, I moved to Thailand, where I have lived ever since. My name is Gregor “Greg” Rasp, and I am 66 years old as of this writing. Adventure and challenging myself have always been integral parts of my life.

Career

My professional career began in the world of IT some 30 years ago. Lots of coffee and sitting into the wee hours of the morning weren't a good way to stay healthy, so about 15 years ago, I decided to retrain and became a personal trainer and running coach, a perfect fit for my love of demanding physical activities. Despite my accident and its aftermath, I have stayed active whenever possible ever since, often against all odds.

Accident

My life wasn't always as easy and comfortable as it is now. Eleven years ago, I had a severe cycling accident that nearly killed me and left my lungs permanently damaged. This led to serious complications seven years later when I was diagnosed with multiple pulmonary embolisms and a rare lung disease called chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH). Without treatment, this condition is fatal. Through my research, I discovered a specialized center in Japan. The doctors did an excellent job, and I am finally cured—check out my blog for more details about my quest for oxygen.

My lungs aren't perfect, and that can make working out a bit more difficult. But I'm not letting that stop me!  Instead, I see it as a challenge to overcome.

Global Fast Fit

I recently discovered Global Fast Fit (GFF) through my wife, and I was hooked. GFF is a challenge to master, especially in my situation.

My plan is to train for the GFF challenge in the coming weeks and share my training and progression on this blog.

As an aside, my wife, Sutinee "Nee" Rasp, is the current female GFF champion with a record finish time of 3 min 26 sec. She is also an accomplished trail runner, ranking in the top 10 in Thailand. As her coach, I am incredibly proud of Nee! Her outstanding performance results from her exceptional fitness, acquired through many years of consistent training.

Thank You!

Thank you very much, Global Fast Fit, for allowing me to present myself and express my thoughts to a global, like-minded audience.

Greg, I was really moved by your story; I followed the links back to the other blog as well. I wish you had shared some more details about the accident; from the photos, it appears like it happened in broad daylight. How did the driver hit you head on? Did you see him coming?
In any event, I have huge respect for anyone like yourself who manages to recover from such a serious accident. I know it involves a huge amount of daily, step by step painful rehab; I don't know if I could do that.
